For me, this book took the many sources of healing available today: stress reduction techniques, healthful eating, and exercise, and did two things with them. First, it gathered them all up and showed how to make any of the ones we choose work for us, giving precise timing to empower these techniques to begin reversing disease and making a difference rather than just slowing it down or worse, not working at all. This helped explain what to do if, for example, a relaxation technique we choose (such as meditation or relaxation response) doesn’t seem to be working, and how to fix that. This helped me stop chasing more and more powerful techniques, and know when to simply use what I already have in a new way, or in fact, when it really might be appropriate to choose a new technique (and the authors supply many to choose from). Second, it got even deeper into these healing methods. With relaxation, for example, beneath our stress there is something called “bracing” that we need to release. Typical relaxation methods, includng massage, may or may not help this, and the authors tell you just how to make them work. I use this book with my family, and as a Reiki therapist, plan to suggest it to my clients. Thanks so much to its authors.

“Recapture Your Health” focuses on relaxation, nutrition and exercise. This is the basis for the entire program so you can maintain optimal health. Not only does this show a way to a healthier lifestyle, it promises relief from a wide variety of chronic health conditions. Whether you are already suffering from a condition or want to take a more preventive approach, this book has many pertinent answers. The authors teach a more holistic approach and also explain the roots of illness.

What is the real cause of illness?

How can you reduce depression, anger and anxiety?

Is there a natural solution for chronic fatigue?

Throughout the book, personal examples are shown as people who followed this program explain how their symptoms disappeared. Some of the main things the authors recommend is the elimination of sugars, alcohol and caffeine. In order to follow the program there is also a handy list of foods you should include or avoid. If you enjoy reading labels, there is also a section about additives.

After following this program you can expect better sleep, happier moods and less headaches. As the authors say: “…most people lose health because of an unhealthy lifestyle.” This book puts you on a fast track with a special section called “quick start guides.” This allows you to get started even before you have read a third of the book.

The authors present a discussion about supplements, encourage healthy lifestyle changes and give lists of exercises like Pilates, Yoga and Walking. I also though their list of helpful ways to reduce stress was very helpful.

  4. Great Resource!

“For the millions who are suffering from chronic and poorly understood symptoms, this book is the answer.” — Christiane Northrup, M.D.

If you are well and want to stay well–or if you have one of the hundreds of illnesses and chronic ailments, this books will give you hope.

Their three-step wellness program details the protocol for Relaxation, Diet and Exercise that has proven successful in reversing chronic illness OR helping you maintain good health and prevent illness.

If you want and need answers now, you can get the general idea by reading the chapter-end summaries. However, the authors encourage you to read every word to really understand this program.

Their quick-start guide to three aspects explain:

    1. Skilled relaxation/mediation to be done 20 minutes one to two times a day.

    2. Perfect whole foods diet (eliminate all refined foods from your diet and eat only whole food–food that has had no parts removed).

    3. Right exercise–choose something you like to do and enjoy it for 20 minutes three days a week.

Do you have or know someone with a chronic illness? Everyone does! Following is a sampling from list on page 79.

    fibromyalgia

    chronic fatigue syndrome

    rheumatoid arthritis

    hypoglycemia

    acne

    high cholesterol

    chronic sinus problem

    gum/teeth/jaw problems

    food hypersensitivities

    gastric issues

    candidia

Over the years, I’ve had several clients who were alternative healthcare givers, and still I was shocked that so many “diseases” as defined by traditional (allopathic) medicine can be helped by these three mind/body methods.

Most chronic illnesses or symptoms appear suddenly but have been building up over time. “Chronic” relates to the duration of the symptom, rather than the severity.

Armchair Interviews says: You will come away with a much better understanding of the mind/body affect on illness and your own health. Great resources for the well–or the “non well.”

  5. A Recipe For Wellness
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
While conventional medicine tends to focus on covering up symptoms with medications, many of which cause dangerous side-effects, this book provides step-by-step instructions on how to potentially avoid the doctor’s office altogether. Based on the premise of ‘how to be healthy,’ this book outlines what Dr. Stoll refers to as the ’3-Legged Stool of Wellness’ – Skilled Relaxation, A Whole Foods Diet, and Exercise. As simple as this sounds, there are many crucial aspects that one needs to be aware of in order to implement the Wellness lifestyle effectively. ‘Recapture Your Health’ provides all the knowledge, insight, frequently asked questions, and troubleshooting guides needed for anyone to do just what the title says. Jan DeCourtney’s writing style makes this book both fun and motivational to read cover to cover as well as easy to use as a quick-reference using the detailed index in the back. Hats off to this book, a long-awaited tribute to a very important aspect of Walt Stoll’s life’s work of getting the truth about Wellness out to the public!

  6. A Practical, Wide-Ranging Body of Work for Your Body
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The great thing about books by people who’ve learned the hard way, who’ve endured adversity, is that their authors can offer real-world expertise. When a person like Jan, who’s endured health adversity, teams up with a board-certified doc, the result is a well-balanced compilation of sensible health approaches.

Such authors may also have a birds-eye view of their subject, bringing options before readers that might otherwise require umpteen visits to a range of specialists. Especially if one has already discovered the long, expensive way that some very viable options are beyond the world-view of some number of specialists.

Recapture Your Health supplies a broad-based look at a plethora of options for doing exactly what the title suggests. This book is a great tool for learning about many health-supporting options and how to employ them. This book can help you put your entire health scene in perspective and connect the dots into a related whole.

It’s also very sensibly organized, making the information you need–be it programmatic or supportive–easy to find.

Recapture Your Health is an impressive body of work for your body, your body-mind, your body-mind-spirit.

  8. The “top of the mountain” just got closer!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
With great volumes of information available to us as never before, a certain amount of confusion seems almost inherent. Naturally, the extremely complex and everchanging subject of human health and medicine has become one of the largest breeding grounds for this exact phenomenon.

“Recapture Your Health”, by Walt Stoll, MD and Jan DeCourtney, CMT puts the power of choice back into the hands of the individual healthcare consumer. By teaching us the true nature of the many chronic illnesses which plague our modern world, they free us to make informed, reason-based, and proactive choices concerning health for ourselves and our families.

In short, Dr. Stoll and Ms. DeCourtney have successfully and seamlessly bridged the gaps in the blueprints to optimal health, and achieved the delicate balance between teaching, and helping us to learn on our own. “Recapture Your Health” contains no expert voices lecturing from pedestals; only the first hand experiences of two leaders in their respective fields, who have made healing their life’s work.

  9. I loved this book!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
    I loved this book!

I got it when I was recovering from a surgery and had terrible symptoms like sky-high blood pressure, constipation, and others.

This book helped me so much. It was entertaining. Sometimes I laughed out loud.

It gave me hope. To me, it was like having my own personal trainer as I read every word. I just started to do everything in the book and it worked for me like a miracle. During the time I read the book I was still going to regular allopathic Doctors, but I attribute most of my recovery to this book & the website.

The reason it helped, I believe, is that it gives you a range of choices depending on where you are. For example, at first I couldn’t exercise at all without shortness of breath. It gave me permission so-to-speak to do just 5 minutes at first. For someone else, I imagine it would be different as you read all the recommendations and advice.

I plan to read this book again word-for-word now because I’ve slacked off on the skilled relaxation and whole foods diet some, and I know how much following the advice in this book can help any symptom. I highly recommend it!

  10. Priceless Information For Lifelong Health and Maintenance
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Walt Stoll and Jan DeCourtney have given readers a chance to redeem their health or maintain it using three simple tools. Seemingly so simple, yet the authors have used their talents to give a good explanation of some of the who’s, what’s, and why’s of the road back to health.

Even if you think you know the information to wellness they present, “Recapture Your Health” is still a great reference to have linking many common and not so common ailments to the modern day interpretation of stress. Many of us have used one of their key elements at one time or another, but in putting all the pieces of the puzzle together you have a great weapon to use in the war against disease.

If you have not yet had to deal with a serious illness or condition, you can certainly can go a long way to prevent it, according to the book, and maintain quality your quality of life for the years to come.

    Something for everyone,

    A+

  11. Deceptively simple yet an excellent resource!
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
There is nothing really new in this book. Eating well, exercising and relaxing is good for your health. Duh!

But it is very well presented, brings up enough (but not too many) testimonials to be inspiring, it is simply written without complicated theories. The diet is easy to do and presented with lots of details. The proposed exercises are varied – very much along the lines of “do what works for you and do it at least 3 times a week”. The Skilled Relaxation is nothing new if you are already familiar with the work of Benson, Cade, Pelletier, Kabatt-Zin, but it is presented here in a non-scholar way that is easy to understand, easy to implement and the book provides the health motivation to keep doing it. Understanding skilled relaxation without actually doing it twice a day is worthless. The text in this book makes you want to do it and to keep doing it.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is sick and hopeless – or anyone who wants to implement good life habits and prevent illness. I like the fact that it does not promise an instant cure for anything but rather proposes a way of living that supports physical, emotional and mental health. Well done!

The weakest point maybe is that it addresses general well being but only mentions in a rather weak way that people with long term diseases may have to be much more specific to completely heal. The proposed diet may not work for everyone, some people may need specific types of exercises and to avoid others, some types of meditation or biofeedback processes may be better than others for some conditions, etc.

However as an adjunct, Dr Stoll bulletin Board [..]) is filled with more specific information and the good doctor is also available to answer questions. A very generous proposition.

Ok – Got to go now and practice my skilled relaxation…

  12. excellent book! !!!!!!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
my search for the perfect book on health and healing is over. I read so many books trying to help heal myself of chronic fatigue syndrome. This book made the most sense to me. It takes dedication to follow the program, but it is worth it. Dr. Stoll and Jan DeCorutney give you lots of motivation in the book. I borrowed it from the library, but will purchase one to keep at home.

  13. Recapture Your Health
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Recapture Your Health outlines a balanced solution to improving overall health. The authors call this program a 3LS solution named after the three legged stool which is perfectly balanced and fully functional without a lot of extras that aren’t needed.

Like the three legged stool, the 3LS program contains three simple but sturdy elements (nutrition, exercise, and relaxation) that create a foundation for improved health. The nutrition section focuses primarily on minimizing damage caused by the high intake of refined foods in the modern diet. The authors promote a whole foods approach to nutrition that reduces and potentially eliminates all refined foods. This is very similar to the slow food philosophy that is gaining popularity.

Likewise, the exercise and relaxation portions of this program are not radical but are somewhat based in good common sense. Participants are expected to exercise twenty minutes three times a week of virtually any type of activity that gets them moving. Relaxation is guided through various types of formal relaxation exercises such as meditation or guided imagery completed for approximately twenty minutes twice a day.

  14. Back to Basics
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This book reminds you how to take care of yourself. The simple plan, which includes skilled relaxation, eating a whole food diet, and doing regular exercise–it’s all laid out here. There are also many, many testimonials from people whose health has improved.

  15. Fabulous Book everyone should read
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Dr Stoll really empowers you to take control of your own health through his 3 pronged approach. (what he calls the “3 legged stool”) I had never been exposed before to the whole foods concept – I guess I was living under a rock all these years. I like having the rationale behind things explained, like WHY skilled relaxation is important (we heal 24X faster than when sleeping) or WHY we should exercise 20 min 3X week (so we get at least 6 minutes past our “Second Wind”) I found this book to be a compelling read and gave it to all my relatives as gifts. I also ordered The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia, and Raw Food, Real World.
