Unquestionably The Best Stress Textbook!!

Managing Stress is one of the best textbooks I have seen and should be required reading at every school. The reason I enjoy the book so much is because it presents a whole new way of seeing stress – stress reframed from a positive, enlightened, mind, body,spirit perspective. The book is such a comprehensive volume of information, including just enough of the most important topics related not only to stress, but to mind-body health in general, as much as any author can encapsulate in such a huge, broad, and growing field.
Another reason why Managing Stress is so good is because Seaward draws readers and students in to the need in our culture for a broader perspective of wellness, one that touches every nuance of life including business, education, the arts, government, and so on.
Wellness is certainly not solely about care for the body; it is perhaps even more importantly about care for mind and spirit. The book is endlessly full of great supporting research and tidbits of information, with studies proving the efficacy of holistic stress-management modalities. Through the use of this text alone one can develop an in-depth knowedge of not only mind-body health, but the whole human condition, what it means to be a human being. I cannot think of too many books I can make such a statement about. If you want to learn how to change your life, study this book – in depth – then choose topics you are most interested in, and go on to study additional resources provided; but even more, learn to put the techniques into practice and you will find not only the jewel of intelligence, but also of wisdom and enlightenment.
Managing Stress – An Excellent Textbook

I had checked out this book from the college library and had found it so packed with information that I needed that I had to have my own copy. When the textbook came, I was delighted to find that a workbook was included in the price of the book. I am thoroughly pleased with it.
Poor scholarship

Interpret this as you will, but this book does not take a scientific approach to the study of stress, preferring to rely on ancient medicine and holistic body-mind-spirit ideas.
Unfortunately, the author not only departs from scientific fact, but also from common-sense scientific methodology. Evidence for “cell memory” is an unverified story of an unnamed woman who had cravings for beer and chicken nuggets after recieving a heart transplant from a motorcyclist. Einstein proved that E=mc^2; even scientists admit the universe is a friendly place made of spiritual energy! These statements reflect poor understanding and scholarship by the author and turn an interesting, harmless book on holistic health into an embarassing lesson on what happens when you believe everything you hear.
Misleading and Incorrect Information

I am a trained Autogenic Therapist to the standards developed by the International Committee for the Coordination of Clinical Application and Teaching of Autogenic Therapy (ICAT). This committee was set up by Dr. Luthe (Canada), Dr. Wallnoffer (Austria), Dr. Cassel (USA), Dr. Sasaki (Japan), Dr. Gonzales de Rivera (Spain), and others to develop training standards for all Autogenic Methods – I have read Dr. Schultz and Dr. Luthe’s 6 volumes of Autogenic Methods.
I have read the information on Autogenic Training given in this book, Managing Stress. I question whether this author has ever read the foundation books on Autogenics, whether he has ever learned Autogenic Training from a properly trained clinician, and whether he has ever practised the method properly. The information contained in Managing Stress does not represent the facts of Autogenic Methods as set out by Dr. Schultz and Dr. Luthe.
If this is true for this one single section of the book, what might be true of other sections? Not sure… Haven’t and wouldn’t read the whole book, simply based on this set of errors… It’s not about TV personalities, it’s about where to find the best information about Autogenics – certainly NOT in this book.
Owner’s manual for the human body

This book was the text for my college Stress Management course to fulfill the health credit requirement. This text was so beneficial that my husband enrolled in the course after a week of repeated serious health crisis after serious health crisis (he was only given 2 weeks or less to live by an electro-physiologist). My husband and I both learned invaluable lessons on taking ownership of our human body.
This book covers it all – from music therapy, art therapy, tai chi, qi gong, nutrition, spirituality, etc. Brian introduces the reader to concepts from Maslow’s theory of self-actualization to cell memory, reiki to st. john’s wort, basically everything relating to taking charge of our stress from A to Z. I have yet to find a more comprehensive book on the foundations for taking charge of the health and wellness of our psychological mind and physical body.
This book is a must read for everyone who owns their body (ie everyone!)
College Professor Gives MANAGING STRESS an A plus plus!!

As a college professor of Health Education, I rate this textbook on Stress Management as OUTSTANDING! I have used Dr. Seaward’s text for over a decade now for my Stress Management classes, and it just keeps getting better and better! My students repeatedly have commented on how well it is written, how it presents the topics in an interesting and helpful manner, and how the illustrations and informational inserts in each chapter are superb. They like his approach in that after reading all the chapters on the variety of coping techniques, they can make informed choices about how to best manage their personal stress. From the teacher’s point of view, the holistic approach to stress management, the well documented causes and effects, and the myriad of management techniques that are thoroughly researched and presented, combine to make this text a wonderful tool and guide to use in my classes. It is truly a well researched, comprehensive and factual text that is a refreshing change from reading a lot of other “self-help” books that are written to promote one author’s message on one particular subject.

I highly recommend this book. I took a college course and we used this book. It is a very balanced book and looks into all areas of Eustress (good stress), Neustress (neutral stress) and distress (bad stress). It gives a plethora of step by step information on many different techniques into managing and eliminating stress. It was so helpful to me, I decided to keep the book once my class was over. There is also an excellent accompanying journal called Managing Stress “A Creative Journal” you can buy to go with it.

I’m in an advance study program in health and wellness and this text book is part of one of my courses. However, this book can be used by anyone interested in learning how to manage their stress.
I have read several other works on managing stress and this is simply the best I have ever read. It is easy to read with lots of graphics and photos. It has a section in each chapter that highlights definitions you should understand and remember. There are many worksheets to help you work though your own stress issues. At the end of each chapter there is a summary in bullet form that highlight the most important concepts. The books walks you though stress management in a step by step indebt process. You can skip around chapters reading the ones you need or are interested in and still get a lot out of it.
If you are studying stress at the college level you will love this book and if you are just interested in learning and managing your own stress and can read at a 9th grade level you will find this a fantastic resource. The last chapter covers more than 10 of the most powerful stress management techniques that you will learn to use for the rest of you life.
The workbook that came with my order is an outstanding addition to helping you understand stress management. And my girl friend uses the relaxation CD to help her sleep.
