White Teas Sampler 4 tins

This is the conventional way of making tea in the Australian Outback. The drover with his herd of sheep or the itinerant shearer with his swag would have to drink water wherever he could find it. Tea is a good way to drink the water and the billycan reduces tea making to sheer simplicity.

The billy itself is plainly a kind of metal cooking pot with a lid and a bucket handle that goes on the fire. The water is boiled and tea made all in the same pot. For a family choose one of 1 to 2 litres, but for a larger gathering you need a billy of perchance 10 litres or more. It will soon be blackened and sooty on the outside but clean and shiny inside, which adds to the authenticity.

When you travel with your swag in the Outback you don’t carry fresh milk. It is established to flavour billy tea with tinned sweetened condensed milk, but the flavour is not one every one likes. You will need:

  1. Strong black tea (any kind, fresh if possible)
  2. Billycan of suitable size
  3. Water (clean and fresh if possible)
  4. Campfire, and someplace to put the billy
  5. Tin mugs (250 ml or larger)
  6. Gum leaf (optional)
  7. Milk, sugar or condensed milk, as available.

How to go in regards to it:

  1. Fill the billycan with water: at least 250 ml per person.
  2. Cover with lid and put on the fire to boil.
  3. When the water boils, take off the fire by lifting the handle with a stick and remove lid. Be careful – everything is very hot.
  4. Sprinkle tea on top of water: a handful for a family billy, various handfuls for a huge one.
  5. Drop in the gum leaf for it is distinctive flavour (optional).
  6. Wait. After with regards to 5 minutes the tea leaves will all of a sudden drop to the bottom. Tapping the side of the billy with a stick may help (at least a heap of people do it!).
  7. Pour cautiously into tin mugs leaving tea leaves in the bottom of the billy.
  8. Flavour with milk, sugar or condensed milk if liked.

The tea is strong, inspiring and a astoundingly good flavour. An Australian bush barbeque would unquestionably not be the same without billy tea. It goes exceptionally well with damper [http://www.abc.net.au/goulburnmurray/stories/s1150827.htm] and jam or golden syrup, but that is another story!

A gum leaf means a young, green leaf of a eucalypt tree. These are available in a astoundingly big number of places outside Australia, but it is very much an acquired taste.

Tradition is that the dregs of the tea from cups and billy are poured into the fire to help put it out before leaving the camp.

G’day!

  1. Amazing deal
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The worst thing about buying tea is when you spend $10-15 and then end up hating the tea, this sampler is great because it lets you try just a little bit of 4 classic types of white tea before you dive into a larger purchase, plus the tins are the perfect size or traveling

  2. Great Stuff in Small Packages
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
At first it seemed like I paid way too much – the tins are quite small, and not knowing much about loose tea, I could not imagine I got much for my money. I was wrong – not only were the tea’s tasty and fun to try; but they have really lasted. The service was wonderful, the product excellent and I would recomend this sampler to anyone interested in learning more about tea and its preperation with out the traditional “tea bag”

  3. A Perfect Way to Try Something New
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve only recently switched over to loose leaf tea only I had never bought from this company before, but I definitely will be making larger purchases after trying this little sampler. I had gotten it so that I may try some flavors I had never had before and this was perfect for me. It was shipped quickly and even my friends were impressed when I had them try it.

  4. Great White Teas

I purchased these samplers with my new Zarafina Tea machine and found them to be quite nice. If you prefer the milder taste of white tea over green tea, you’ll like these.

I am quite familiar with white teas and have ordered from several sources or purchased them locally when available. I have NEVER been charged so much for shipping. 4 tiny tins are already in a box but were put into a larger cardboard box (increasing size and weight). I was charged $5.75 for shipping on a virtually weightless shipment of teas. Will do business with Uncle Lee instead

  6. White tea

Delicious. It tastes good but I had trouble figuring out it was steeped and ready. Call me dumb-white tea has no color! The teas came quickly and are more than advertised. Yum! It is so relaxing to sit with a cup of this tea.

  7. An Amazing Collection
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am relatively new to loose tea, and I ordered this sampler. I was blown away. The white tea from Adagio redefined how I think about tea. They are delightfully light and tasty, and mix deliciously with all kinds of herbals for interesting blends.

Be forwarned. The best white teas are VERY expensive, but after trying them, you’re likely to think it worth the price.
