The other day, I received an email from someone who wrote: “I’ve always had fine, thin hair, but lately it appears a lot thinner to me. I wonder if this is just a natural part of aging when you have my type of hair or if I have some hair loss that I need to be concerned about.” This is not at all an not common question. Often we don’t detect anything that’s overly troublesome or we chalk up a loss in density as a normal part of aging, but one day we wake up, look in the mirror, and see a drastic and troubling change. Or sometimes, we feel this change if we try to put our hair up and observe that there just isn’t as much to pull back or we run our fingers through it and just don’t feel as much as we applied to. In the following article, I’ll tell you galore things to look for to help you determine if what you are looking at and experiencing is normal for you or if it’s something that you may want to take a closer look at. Did You Have Fine Or Thin Hair As A Child?: Often the easiest way to tell if your hair is comparatively normal for you is to go back and look at pictures of yourself at respective ages allround your life. Often, your hair texture even at an early age will be a clue. Once a kid is passed regarding 4-5 years of age, they must have the texture that they’re going to have for the rest of their lives. And, this may be very different, even in families. My oldest son has hair that is so course that you could floss your teeth with it, while my youngest son has texture that is more like mine, fine and thin. If Your Hair Is Fine And Thin, Do You Still Have A Lot Of It?: Generally, folks who have hair that is of a finer texture will have more hairs per square inch to make up for that fact. Hair dressers employed to say to me: “you have fine hair, but boy is there a lot of it.” When I used to get perms (which would help because of my strand’s texture) it would take hours because there was just so much of it to roll. So while it may be rather natural for your person strands to be thinner than others, you must in general have sufficient to have a decent density that isn’t so noticeably dissimilar that it isn’t registered as noticeable to others. Sure, your pony tail may be littler in depth, but it doesn’t stand out as having something seriously wrong. The over all effect is still rather acceptable. For example, the actress Naomi Watts has fine, thin hair, but most would still categorize her as someone who has “good” or “pretty” hair. The over all effect is still rather pleasing, even though she’s in all likelihood well conscious that she ought to take her texture into account when she cuts or styles her hair. Her hair doesn’t appear flyaway, skimpy, or that it won’t hold a curl or style and it’s still rather delighting to the eye. Thin, Finer Hair As The Result Of Hair Loss With Miniaturization: If the overall effect that you are experiencing now is not one of a decent density and volume, then it’s possible that you are experiencing androgen or medical related hair loss with aggressive shedding or loss and compromised regrowth or miniaturization. Usually this is a combining of losing density because of shedding hair and then the regrowth being negatively affected so that it comes in more thin and more fine and no longer offers sufficient coverage. If this is the case, it’s best to address this as soon as possible. The longer this issue goes on, the more difficult it will be to regrow all of the hair that you have lost and the harder it will be to reverse the miniaturized texture. |

She did it…there’s hope for me!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I wanted to save money, so I called the library to check for this book…”Finally Thin” by Kim Bensen. Three copies were currently circulating, and there were 32 people on hold for a copy of the book.
This confirmed to me there are so many women out there who are attracted to a book that tells them, “I did it…you can too! Here’s firsthand proof”! The cover of this book speaks compassion and hope, and those who would like to shed pounds but haven’t gotten control yet, are looking for empathy (it’s difficult); and a confirmation that a normal approach, and a healthy diet WILL work. This book is an excellent and true story.
Great read
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This book hits home and she is honest about the trials and things people wanting to lose weight go through. I enjoyed it and the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is because a couple chapters are dedicated to explaining diets and the way they work and I enjoyed more the chapters of her life and all the suggestions on how to make it. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to those who want and need inspiration while making the weight loss journey.
delightfully honest
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
For anyone who has been on a diet for most of thier life, this book takes a funny look at the emotional side of overeaters. And although the author used Weight Watchers for her weight loss goals, she gives the reader the tools to form any diet to thier lifestyle thus giving you a better chance at sticking to whatever diet you choose.

Do it for yourself; Buy this book. This has been the most inspirational book. I too have lost a significant amount of weight on Weight Watchers and have kept it off for more than 5 years. I felt like Kim was telling my story as I was reading this. I finally felt like someone else knows what it was like to be on this journey and what it felt like before this journey began. I now realize that someone else knows that after 5 years the struggle with weight never goes away and the journey will never end. I am not alone with my feelings! If you currently or ever have struggled with your weight buy this book! You won’t regret it.
Good read

I enjoyed this book. Kim is completely honest about her experiences and gives great tips and tricks. I do wish she focused more on the nutritional value of foods instead of just the calories, but if you use the ideas part of the time then you could have a great diet. It is a great motivational book. If she can lose over 200 pounds, then I can get up and work out!
Not worth the money
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Not worth the money. If you’re reading this book, it’s because you’ve already tried all the diet that are out there. Well when I got the book I thought it was about her battle with weight. Her ah ah moment and the struggle to lose the weight and then keep it off. Instead her life story was about 20 pages. She woke up one morning and decided to take it off, 20 pages later she had lost 200lbs…I don’t think so. I was hoping for the story, the struggles, the ups and downs during the journey and how she made it through. But instead I got a a bunch of pages talking about different diets. Come on, I’ve tried them all, I know them all. I was looking to be inspired and instead I was given a bunch of stuff I didn’t need.
So if you want to read her life story, don’t buy the book, it’s definitely not worth the money.
A little disappointing

I wanted to love this book; I wanted to be inspired by this book; I wanted to be changed by this book. Ms. Benson’s story is certainly a great success story, but I found there to be less substance than I expected. It’s her story told forthrightly and without any glossing over of the potentially embarrassing parts, and there were elements any of us who are overweight can identify with. Nonetheless, I found it somehow lacking. I expect in person, as she leads Weight Watcher meetings and does television and radio interviews, she is more engaging and the same information is disseminated in a few minutes versus over many pages. Again, a nice book and a nice lady, just not what I expected or wanted.

This is a book I have referred to many times. It is very motivational…you really do get the feeling that if she could lose all of that weight, anyone could. And it has some great recipes for lo-cal food.
Finally Thin
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This book is well worth the $. I lost 60 lbs on WW and have maintained for 2 years, but felt myself slipping into some old habits and had regained about 10 lbs., so I bought this upon the recommendation of my sister. Some of the motivational stuff wasn’t new to me, but was good to hear again – esp. the way Kim says it. Also, my two grown daughters (in their early 20′s), two sisters and my mom all bought the book and are equally enthusiastic! – Some of us are on maintenance, but most are wanting to lose weight; yet the book has something for each of us. Lastly, there are tons of good recipes in the back, which that alone made the book worth it for me.

A “must read” if you’re serious about losing weight and being in it for the long haul
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Ms. Benson was so brutally honest (moreso than I think most of us could have been) about her struggles, challenges, humiliating experiences, etc. that lead to her “ah ha” moment to once and for all make a lifestyle change. I felt as though I could have written many of her experiences myself — fully understanding her emotions and even her humiliations. I think this is the first weight loss book I’ve actually read cover to cover, and it’s by far the most inspiring one I’ve ever read. Heck, if Kim can lose 212 pounds and keep it off, surely I can lose less than half of that! But, honestly, I think much of what you “get out of” books like this it really depends upon the frame of mind you are in. The weight loss journey is such a mental effort that you have to be at a point in your life when you’re truly ready and willing to be in it for the long haul or it’s not going to matter WHAT you read. For me, this book was it. I’ve ready numerous such books, but this one I felt was “written for me”. I got it. But I was also ready to be receptive and ready to make a change. I’m doing well on my journey and fully expect to reach my goal. And I will keep this book handy for inspiration along the way! Also, be sure to check out the recipes in the back. She’s got some really great ones listed. And, as a side note, though Kim lost her weight using Weight Watcher’s, she clearly does not endorse any specific program and recognizes that most all programs will work IF they’re followed. I appreciate that since I’ve chosen a different program. I never felt that WW was being pushed at me. Thanks for a great book!!

Amazing inspiration
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Kim Bensen’s book Finally Thin is the most clear and touching story of one woman’s weight loss struggle and triumph. The reality that she kept failing and trying again should inspire any of us who get discouraged along the path. This was no 10 pound yo yo dieter. Her UNBELIEVABLE 212 pound loss makes us feel we can accomplish ANYTHING! Kim’s faith and love of family shines through every word. Read this book!
Nice lady, OK book.
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
The book is divided in to 3 parts. First – Kim’s story. Second – her 10 step plan. Third – Recipes.
The first part is not very long, only about 40 pages or so, and while I did appreciate her honesty in telling some of the most embarrassing moments of her formerly morbidly obese life, there wasn’t really much substance to the story. She describes her big “aha” moment as basically waking up one morning, praying and feeling inspired to try again. That is all nice and fine, but not particularly helpful. I still appreciated Kim’s story, but it didn’t give me the inspiration I was looking for.
The second part is the bulk of the book. This is where she outlines the 10 steps, which I am listing here in my own words, just to keep it more clear.
1. Chose the right diet
2. Set your goals
3. Plan your meals
4. Clean up your environment
5. Gather support
6. Exercise
7. Lighten up your food at home and away
8. Handling temptations
9. Motivation
10. Maintenance
There is really nothing wrong with “the plan”, other than it’s a list that has been artificially constructed to fit the handy-dandy 10-step catch phrase that has been proven to sell. Steps 3 and 7 are pretty much the same thing and could have been combined in to one. Step 1 is really sort of irrelevant to her own story – Kim has been a member of Weight Watchers on and off since the age of 9, so she didn’t have to chose the diet, she simply went back to what she already knew. But without step 1 and by combining 3 and 7, the program would be only 8 steps long, whereas 10 steps just sounds so much better, doesn’t it? There’s really nothing wrong with part 2 of the book, it’s just a lot of repeated information we’ve heard a hundred times with an ever-so-subtle endorsement of Weight Watchers.
The third part – recipes. I guess there’s nothing really wrong with this part either. Except that is, if you are looking for a way to cook fresh and delicious food, you won’t find it here. Canned ingredients and fat-free this and sugar-free that substitutes galore, most of the recipes are not for someone who is looking to eat healthier – just for someone who is looking to reduce the calories, which aren’t really the same things.
My favorite part of the book was the chapter on temptations, there were a few valuable insights about trying to avoid the war instead of trying to win the battle with temptations. Again, this wasn’t new information, but it was interesting to see her stand on this difficult topic.
Overall – I gave the book 3 stars, probably could have given 3.5 if that option was available. It wasn’t useless and was mildly entertaining and slightly inspiring. But if I had known what the book would be like, I would have waited and got it from the library.
