Interesting book though far, far too much science in it for the average person (BTW – I have a Master’s degree and a former college roommate is now a registered dietician so I’ve been around related books and discussions and still found this hard to follow).

I have read a lot of books on physiology, more specifically hormones and metabolism, written by people with board-certified medical degrees. This book explains almost all of what the others do, plus more recent research, in a much easier to read format with helpful charts and references. I was very surprised a book of this quality could come from a non-degreed personal trainer. I have a new respect for Jillian Michaels for passing along medical researched-based facts (many pages of peer-reviewed medical references in the back if you want to check the sources) and dispelling myths like working out on an empty stomach, and the problems with soy and other substances interacting with hormones. Her own story is very interesting and there is a very thorough section explaining hormones and their interconnecting roles in our health. I’ve already started cleaning out my fridge and cabinets.

    The information in this book is great. Complicated information is presented in a fashion that is extremely easy to read. However, there are A LOT of charts in this book. The charts are basically useless in the Kindle because the text is so small. There does not appear to be a way to increase the font of the charts. If you are thinking of purchasing this book, I recommend sticking with a paper version for now.

    I have been reading over several customer reviews, and I have to say I agree with most of what I have read. The information IS a little overwelming, but its also a GREAT book and written from a different stand point than the average diet books that I am used to reading.

    It really made me focus on my body and my health, not just trying to lose weight. I totally recommend the book, but I can see that it may be the type of book that people may want to pick up and flip through at the book store to decide if it suits them or not. I do feel that most people will find the book at least interesting, because there is SO MUCH wonderful information contained within the covers. I would not be surprised to find that the book has been a lifesavor to others, because I truly beleive that balancing our hormones would make a world of difference to those of us suffering from hormonal imbalances.

    Thinking that this would possibly be just another book capitalizing on the incredible body and personality of another star, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I was wrong. The insights provided on your metabolism draws from the latest findings in the human body and hands you a template for putting that knowledge to immediate use!

  4. Great Information, But It’s Tough!

    I am already very knowledgeable about organic foods and produce and eating well. This book really goes into a lot of detail about it all and what you should and should not eat. Which is great. Everyone should know how to eat. I really bought this book to try the “diet” plan. I always want to lose that last 5 to 10 pounds and sometimes it just wants to hang around!! Here’s what I found: The recipes are great (I mean they are really delicious!); however, there is absolutely no wiggle room for anything sweet at all. I know that Jillian is known for being tough — her workout videos are awesome and I love them. But when it comes to dieting and food, I feel there has to be a reward somewhere, so that you aren’t tempted to binge. In this diet there are no sweets at all — I mean nowhere — and I found that I ended up feeling really deprived of my reward for a job well done at the end of the week. So what happened after week one?? I ended up eating 3 chocolate chip cookies and I could have eaten more. The diet is pretty strict, so it didn’t really hurt my weight when I “fell off the wagon” so to speak but still I feel that I would have stuck to it even better had there been a sweet treat at the end of the week. Or how about 1/2 cup of sorbet after dinner one night — is that so bad??!!! Cmon, I don’t think so! I would highly recommend buying this book and trying the meals in it. I can assure you, the weight WILL come off. But longer term, there is no way that this would work out because eventually, if you want a dessert, you are going to get one. And you know what? you deserve a dessert every week and if you work out hard, that shouldn’t be a big deal. This is an awesome book and will definitely get rid of those stubborn lbs. that don’t want to come off but be prepared; this plan is going to be really difficult for the weak-willed or the sweet-tooth!!! But that’s what Jillian is known for: kicking-butt!

    I appreciate the information offered in this book, and I expect by this time next year to have a completely revived endocrine system.

    I haven’t had a weight problem until 5 years ago when I went through menopause. My weight went up 15 lbs with out changing my diet or eating habits. I have always eaten sensibly, rarely eat fast food (2-3 times a year), avoid sugary food but gained weight in my midsection anyway. I am active and workout regularly. I also went through a divorce 5 years ago. I knew something was off in my system. This book explains a lot and I have switched to all organic food to eliminate chemicals bogging down my endocrine system. I still need to address possible excess cortisol in my system (from stress)and may need to intensify my workouts to burn that up. It has only been a few weeks since I implemented Jillian’s suggestions, and I am sure it will take a few months for my body and hormones to heal and balance back out, but my energy and sense of well being is way up, and my stomach is looking flatter already! This book is very informative and enlightening.

    I am still dealing with my fury at our FDA for allowing food suppliers to add so much garbage to our food (Corporate greed is killing us). Trader Joe’s will be getting more of my business in the future, until the new Whole Foods store opens in the area. I just wish organic food wasn’t so expensive…and that our planet was cleaner, I am now more “green conscious” than ever. Thanks Jillian for taking the time and effort to compile this information and research. As a consumer, because of reading this book, I have become an advocate for chemical free food and encourage others to boycott the junk being sold in most supermarkets and restaurants. I hope the media gets on board to help promote and encourage our culture to “get back to natural”, and demand higher quality from our food suppliers. (No wonder America is so fat.)

    Obviously, Jillian knows her stuff! I had checked this book out from the library, but after finishing it, decided to purchase it also. This is the type of book you will want on your book shelf, for life!

    What a great workout. And even better, the workout

    works wonders. I’d recommend this CD to anyone who

    wants to lose a few pounds and doesn’t mind working

    hard to get there. Tones and scupts muscles nicely.

    This is the book that got me off soy, artificial sweetners and got me going organic. Although I don’t agree with everything 100% (like wearing organic clothing and whatnot) I did thoroughly enjoy the book and I even bought a few copies for friends.

    I ordered this book. Now I am not sure what happend but about a month after ordering it I got a letter saying it was returned. Which is interesting because I never got the book nor did I receive a notification that there was an attempt to deliver. Whoever this company uses to deliver I would switch, because I went out to the store and bought it and they lost their sale. No one even tried to email me to ask why I returned the book.

    Very intersesting read. Jillian makes body science easy to understand & hard to put down. I’ve had the some of these same thoughts and can relate. I grew up in an Italian family with a vegetable garden for a backyard and great food that came from it, as well as all the other typical Italian foods. Nothing was bad for You then, (I’m only 39); Over the years, most, if not all foods have been destroyed by “BIG BUSINESS” out to cash in on a more hectic lifestyle that we have to lead due to our runaway government, but that’s a whole other subject. All nationalities, not just Italians, know their own “real” food, not what the restaurants, or companies that stock our supermarket shelves consider what our foods to be. It’s nice to go out to eat, try to make the a wise decision when ordering your meal- why pay for something that’s going to harm You in the long run? same goes for food shopping; we are paying top dollar for processed crap resembling food!!! I would rather pay more for natural, organic, & un-preserved food now, than pay for crap that when I’m older & end up on lots of meds or even in a hospital bed. I haven’t even got into pork, beef, or chicken!!! Think about how these are raised to meet supply & demand.

    I bought the book based on Jillian Michaels’ celebrity as trainer on The Biggest Loser. The book has a lot of good tips and expresses a philosophy that is, potentially, very helpful. I have not put them into practice myself, but there is nothing radical in the book that is not available elsewhere.

    Jillian Michaels is only interested in making herself rich. First of all, she preaches organic food to help with weight loss, but her own weight loss problem was not due to chemicals in food as she makes it seem, she happens to mention in the book that she has a thyroid problem. We would ALL lose weight easily if we have a thyroid problem and got it fixed by a doctor.

    Not to mention that she is a hypicrite because all the while she is preaching about going organic, she has a line of supplements that do not contain all organic and natural ingredients.

    Thirdly, her diet plan in the back consists of an extremely low calorie diet which is not healthy when exercising regularly, which she recommends. Plus it is not realistic for maintaining long term weight loss.

    Do yourselves a favor and save your money on this book.

    Questions I have had for years Jillian answered in this book, thank you so much.

    With living a “whole” life for one week I have felt different, lost some weight, and look at food and what I choose to eat in a totally different way.

    Jillian is dead on. She really knows how to loose weight, but most importantly she shows us how to FEEL good and be healthy. There is a lot of information in this book, that’s why when you buy it, make it more of a reference book rather than a book you read cover to cover and remember everything. I wish it had more recipes but I see she’s coming out with a new recipe book! It will change they way you shop and eat food. Personally, I did not fall head first into everything she says, but I am taking it step by step and making small changes and I can really feel the difference. For me, it’s not about loosing weight, it’s about feeling healthy and having energy. This is a great read, and a great reference book.

    Master Your Metabolism lets you see a personal side of Jillian Michaels that you aren’t allowed to see on The Biggest Loser. There is so much more to her than a “mean and tough trainer”. The concept of the book is right on and a livable way to change your eating FOREVER. I highly recommend the book if the readers are really ready to change their eating and thinking. It isn’t just about losing weight though that is her focus. Eating the way she suggest – organic whole foods – goes way beyond losing weight. That is just the tip of the iceberg. We have tried many diet ideas and this is the most comprehensive that is workable. Fresh vegetables and fruit, whole grains and beans AND organic dairy and range fed or organic animal products. It is what I have always believed to be the best way to eat. She makes it easy for us to put it together with a few new ideas added to old ideas about natural nutrition. It did leave me with questions and comments and wanting to sit down with her and talk but I have been studying eating and diets for over 30 years. For the person that is eating the standard American diet and knows nothing about nutrition especially the overweight ones, it is a good beginning. Just do what she says and know that it does work. When you are eating the right kinds of food, you will find you don’t crave the bad stuff as much. Without trying, you start losing weight. I have a long way to go, but I also know that this is permanent. I can’t go back to the old way of eating – fried food, sugar filled anything, and processed and preservative filled “fake” food. Ad much as anyone wants to justify eating the crap, down deep we know that what she is saying in Master Your Metabolism is really true.
