Works for me, but is kind of like flipping a coin between Clear Skin or Not

Though Proactiv Solution works pretty well for me, I have never seen a product vary so drastically from one user to another. I started getting terrible acne in the 9th grade, and it had a major effect on my confidence. People would stare at my zits–and not into my eyes–whenever we were having a conversation, and my 10th grade history teacher even held me back at the end of class specifically to recommend a skin care product that she had ordered from Avon. If that were not embarrassing enough, my acne reached a peak during my senior year of high school–the primetime of every young woman’s life. Every inch of my cheeks was covered in bright red, pus-filled pimples. It was so terrible that some people looked disgusted to even stand near me, and I had to wear a TON of concealer for my senior photos–which only exacerbated the problem as soon as picture day was over. After my high school graduation, I started spending a lot of time out at the pool, and (despite what the experts say), the sun drastically improved my skin. My face turned really red one day when I forgot the sunblock, and the next day, all of the zits were gone. However, when the summer ended and I went to college in the fall, the zits came back. It was then that I decided that I need something stronger than an over-the-counter medicine to deal with my skin. After watching a commercial for Proactiv Solution, I ordered it over the phone on a whim. The first few weeks didn’t give me any results, but after a about a month, the product worked to its full potential. I have been using it for almost two years now, and I am very happy with my decision to purchase it. Though it has not provided the magical results that are showcased in every commercial (I still get a couple of pimples every couple of weeks, my face is not the horrible red mask that it once was. Unlike some reviewers reported, the product does not dry my face out at all, and I haven’t experienced any redness. The most redeeming product of the entire system is the toner. Though it does not smell very potent, it succeeded in removing from my hands and forearms a botched application of self-tanning lotion that almost a week of constant scrubbing did nothing to help. For me, this is very good stuff. Unfortunately, as I stated, this product varies so widely from customer to customer that it is hard to determine the effectiveness of its use. In my circle of friends, three girls (myself included) are using Proactiv. My skin reacted very nicely to the product, but the other two weren’t as lucky. One of the girls had mild acne and experienced no change in her condition. Another girl had moderate acne and experienced such severe burning and redness of the skin that she discontinued usage and even voluntary went through the seven levels of Hell (also known as Proactiv Service) to get a refund.

Overall, here are my basic recommendations for those considering using Proactiv:

1.) Since results vary so widely between each user, buy the smallest amount of the product that is available. That way, if it does not match your particular needs, you are not out an arm and a leg on something totally useless

2.) Beware of the freebies/extras. The basic three step Proactiv system and the Daily Oil Control lotion work wonders (compared to the “before” situation), but the other items in the Proactiv line were actually pretty damaging. As a “free gift”, I received a tube of the Refining Mask. I applied it according to the directions, but approximately twenty minutes after I removed it, my face was covered in large red, itchy blotches. I immediately threw the tube in the garbage, and by the time I resumed using my regular system the next day, the spots were gone. So, if you get extras in the mail, proceed with caution.

3.) DO NOT, under any circumstances, tell the representative that you want a free month’s supply VitaClear Vitamins with your purchase. First of all, the vitamins are disgusting. VitaClear comes in a box with thirty individually wrapped packets of 5 vitamins. After taking that first packet of five vitamins one morning, I had to make a run to the restroom to vomit. The next day, I had didn’t throw up, but I did a second time after using the vitamins a few days later. Though I followed the direction to eat before usage, no matter how much or how little I ate, I would puke at least twice a week. If this is not enough, as soon as you agree to accept a free order, you (unknowingly) sign yourself up to receive auto-shipments of Vitaclear every two months–which means that your credit card will automatically be charged $29.99 every six or weeks. I have no idea how to cancel an account with VitaClear (which is sold by a different company than Proactiv). The only reason I stopped receiving shipments was because I changed addresses and my credit card just happened to expire that same month. So, if you like swallowing five vitamins each day that will make you puke, feel free to sign up for auto shipments of a product that is impossible to cancel.

4.) As I mentioned previously, Service is Hell (according to the people I know who have tried to cancel). If you want to cancel your account, you have to locate the customer service number from the website or from your previous bill. Proactiv does not allow easy online cancellations or (to my knowledge) mail-in requests to cancel. Then, when you call a representative and mention that you want to cancel your account, you are mysteriously put on hold for an indefinite amount of time–though they jump at the chance to talk to you if you are willing to order Proactiv. If you are not put on hold, the reps will talk in circles and try to convince you to order more products. One of my friends who successfully canceled her account recommended setting up a web count on the Proactiv site, going to the help feature, and then emailing a representative with the question “How do I cancel my account?” A rep contacted her by email a few days later, asked for her account number, and subsequently canceled the account. I recommend following this procedure or continue to receive the automatic shipments each month.
Overall, this product worked for me, but it will not work for everyone. It is kind of like spinning the Wheel of Fortune or flipping a coin…only this time, instead of head and tails, the sides are “Clear Skin” and “Not”.

Buy on Amazon!! Avoid Proactiv.com site at all costs!!!

What ever you do, do NOT buy this from the Proactiv web site. They will force you into a auto delivery system that is next to impossible to escape. All the bad things you hear about their customer service is a 100% FACTUAL!!!! However, the products are very good for mild to moderate acne, but some folks do not see the results they had hoped to acheive after all the hype. Your best bet is to purchase the products from a seller here on Amazon at a considerable discount. While you will not get the 60 day gaurantee, you will not be locked into a nightmare dealing with Proactiv attempting to escape the endless automatic purchases they will continue to send you. These products are VERY EFFECTIVE for MOST individuals, but NOT all. I hope this clears things up a bit.

Poor Service

I am 28 and had a few blemishes, so I decided to try proactiv. Now my skin is a mess! It seemed like it would work, so I stuck with it for a month, and then I got another box in the mail of more product. Be wary, it is not obvious that once you buy the initial kit you will automatically be signed up to receive proactive and be charged continuously. Perhaps proactiv works for some, but since it was having reverse effects for me I called to return the additional box of product that they sent me. Though I still had 2 weeks left to return proactiv for a refund, the customer service representative said that they take 4-6 weeks to process returns, and so it would not be enough time to get my return order refund! Not only do I now have to pay for shipping and handling which is estimated to be around $10 but additionally for a certificate of delivery so I can prove I sent the product in on time. How frustrating. My last rant is that once the customer service woman heard I wanted to return the product, she tried to get off the phone very fast, and I had to keep asking her not to hang up, since she was VERY short and not forward about how to go about handling the return (ie. address, filling out the return slip etc). I would normally not write any review even if the product didn’t work for me, but the customer service i received put me over the edge.

Works With Strings Attached

Since I was 11 or 12 I’ve had acne issues – it started out mild but eventually my skin became oily and filled with acne; Now 18 years old, I’ve tried ProActive, Clearasil, and now this AcneFree system.

First of all, let me say: Don’t waste your time on ProActive. Of the three I mentioned above, it was the least effective. ProActive is just basically watered-down Clearasil, which is great for use on mild acne.

However, for moderate to severe acne, I highly recommend this product. I’ve been using it for a little more than two weeks and, while my face is not completely free of acne (although I suspect it will be soon), it is much less irritated and my skin does feel softer. I don’t have many bumps, just red blotches where the acne used to be. These mild blotches are going away each passing day.

HOWEVER, I must state: while this product is great for severe acne and works well (yes, better than ProActive, in my opinion) I would NOT recommend using it for mild acne or as some kind of skin care treatment. These are POTENT chemicals that you are putting on your face/chest/back, not some mild antibiotics.

Now, my skin has been very tolerant to acne medications thus far, and I have not experienced any itching, peeling or irritation. However, this product did BURN around my eyes. DO NOT USE IT WITHIN AN INCH OF YOUR EYES! THEY SAY IT WILL BURN, AND THEY MEAN IT!

The third step of the morning routine, which I believe in the repair lotion, is a gritty, sandpaper-feeling substance. In the beginning, it stung when I put it on because of its rough texture and the fact that my skin was sensitive due to the acne. However, once your skin begins to clear up, it won’t bother you so much anymore. For a week or two, you just have to soldier on and deal with it. It is also possible that it will dry your skin out. What many reviewers don’t understand, however, is that this is SUPPOSED to happen. That is how Benzoyl Peroxide and other acne medications work – they dry out the affected area to kill the bacteria and other impurities that cause acne. If you get mild dry skin, that means it is WORKING! If you hate the feeling of dry skin, however, use an oil free or low-oil moisturizer. It will make your skin softer while also not impeding the effect of the acne medication.

Overall, I recommend this product to anyone with moderate to severe acne. This is a very powerful system; to put it in perspective, ProActive and Clearasil have 3-4% Benzoyl Peroxide whereas this system uses 10%. It is a very powerful, potent system. Use it wisely, and don’t be afraid to reduce how often you use it if it irritates your skin. Your skin will gradually become used to it and the burning or irritation will decrease. However, I sincerely must stress to not use this around your eyes – my skin had not become irritated with anything else before, and when I applied it around my eyes, it burned. I don’t mean stung, I mean burned, where there were dark red circles around my eyes (they went away in about 2 days, but were tender to the touch).

Also, it’s not exactly perfume – I notice a few reviewers gave it a bad review because it smelled bad. Yeah, it doesn’t smell the best, but the smell wears off once the lotion has been absorbed into your skin. As long as you’re more interested in losing acne than how it smells, it shouldn’t bother you.

I only started breaking out with acne in my early thirties. After trying the Loreal adult acne system for 2 months & Proactiv for 6 months with minimal results, I decided to give this a try. Yes, it made my skin very dry the first few weeks but I used a moisturizer over it kept using it and got fantastic results. I had the hard, large painful nodules on my face and this not only cleared them but I don’t even break out anymore. One kit lasted me 6 months and my skin is soft & smooth. After the acne went it away, it did leave behind the black marks but Avon’s skin brightener faded those out almost overnight. I highly recommend this product.

Worked BETTER than Proactiv!!

First off I want to explain that I have had terrible acne off and on (mostly on though) for the past 8 years. I had to be put on Accutane my sophmore year for 6 months in high school and then again my freshman year of college for another 3 months. I have been struggling ever since then and needed an alternative to dermatoligist bills and prescriptions for acne treatment.

I was having extremely painful and frequent breakouts in the later half of last year and in early November I happened to stumble upon this product. I had my doubts because I had already given Proactiv a couple of tries in the past.

The first week of using the 4 products in the package my face became EXTREMELY dry! At first I was worried because it would always be a little red and irritated for the first hour or two after going through the routine. However, within 4 days ALL of my blemishes (big and small) had cleared up! Within a couple of weeks my skin even became smoother, softer, and more even-toned. Trust me, if you have problem skin and want to try something new, this product is definitely worth a shot!

Also, I love that you can buy this in pretty much any Walgreens and Walmart so it’s very convenient…no waiting for it to be delivered. I purhased mine at Walmart for $20-something in November 2006 and still have more than half remaining of each product in the pack.

Thank you University Medical for making an affordable product that actually works! Best of luck to all of you who are struggling with acne…and don’t mark this one off your list!

So, I went to work researching everything I perchance could in regards to acne and after years of trial and error I found a treatment procedure that cleared me up completely. I made Acne.org to share my regimen with the world. I’ve been overwhelmed by how well it works for persons all over the world. Great BP and cleanser. Horrible moisturizer.

I am very grateful for this skin treatment regimen. I think that Dan has the right ideas when it comes to ridding your face of acne. The gentle cleanser and the benzoyl peroxide included with this kit are top notch. You will not find another benzoyl peroxide that comes even close to this product. The cleanser is very similar to Cetaphil’s skin cleanser.

I will say, however, that the moisturizer included with this kit is absolutely horrible. It reacts with the BP treatment and serves to burn and irritate your skin. If anything, it will cause more acne breakouts rather than remedy them. It is also very greasy and leaves skin shiny.

For this reason alone, I cannot recommend purchasing this starter kit. A better choice would be to purchase a large bottle of the treatment (which is unrivaled) and possibly a large bottle of the cleanser (but Cetaphil or something similar would be equally good). Find another moisturizer! If you do, let me know what you find. I use Key’s Soap RX Sunscreen for my AM moisturizer and it works great. Still looking for a good evening moisturizer that is somewhat similar (cream and non-greasy, and of course something that doesn’t burn my face).

unbelievably great

i bought this package because i tried the cleanser at a friend’s house and really liked it. i am amazed at how quickly and thoroughly the regimen works to clear up my skin. as a teen, i never had acne (and probably took a little too much pride in that) and karma sent me a healthy dose of those under-the-skin, red welty zits that look almost like bugbites now that i’m in my 30s. literally, within 2 or 3 days of using these products, my skin had cleared up. two things to be aware of—1. follow the directions on the website and work up to the full dosage of benzoyl peroxide to avoid dry, burning, flaking skin and 2. don’t miss out on an evening/morning–i’ve found if i skip even one night i will have a bit of a breakout the next day. oh and one last thing—the company has great customer service; i emailed about a broken pump and a new one was on my doorstep two days later.

Forget all about Proactiv!

I purchased this kit because I was sick of the spotty results I was getting with Proactiv, plus the high cost for mediocre results. I am not slamming Proactiv, in fact I still use all the leftover “repairing lotion” as my BP treatment, I just wasn’t satisfied with my continued breakouts on that system. So, I decided to give the [...] regimine a shot, and I haven’t regretted that choice once in the 3 weeks I’ve been using it. I have followed the process to the letter (although I started with more benzoyl peroxide because I had been using Proactiv for a few years), and the process has been working exactly as set out on the website. The second week of use I developed one nodule (which had been surfacing before I started the regimine) and another pimple. Now, after the third week, all acne has healed, no new pimples are forming, and my scarring is slowly beginning to fade. I actually have hope again that my skin will be clear and glowing — Hope I had lost during my years of struggling with acne while using Proactiv.

I also purchased the 10% AHA lotion, because in addition to my pimples I am getting wrinkles. Ah, the joys of aging gracefully… The combination of the normal [...] regimine day and night, with the replacement of AHA for my night time moisturizer has made such a dramatic difference.

Bottom line: This works, it costs roughly the same as Proactiv but you get much larger quantities, and if you follow the regimine you won’t look back. I recommend this product very highly for anyone with mild to severe acne.
