This soft cover text mainly written by Bruce McEwen entitled The End of Stress as We Know It presents research on the connection between functions of the brain and how these functions are positively affected or stimulated by stress. In addition to this, this text also shows how stress can bring on ailment and other health disturbances such as asthma, diabetes, ulcers and increased susceptibility.
Perhaps what this book describes are the two types of stress—eustress and distress. Eustress is the type of stress that is defined by psychologists as the stress that we need in order to function well in a day to day basis. Distress by the way is the type of stress that cause most of the problems such as being fired, having to cope with sudden deaths, unwanted pregnancies and such things. It is obvious that the type of stress that this book ‘ends’ is the distress since most of the time, it is only this type of stress that we call ‘stress.’ So, it is quite good that this book made clear the distinction between the two types of stress and that it made it possible for people to understand that not all stresses are bad for us after all. Some are just there so we are ‘driven’ to function and go on living. more info
