I have tried many products and none worked for me. I lost about 20 pounds in 4 months. I did how ever workout five days a week and watched what I ate. I was fooled by the fancy box.  This product gave me no help at all.   I usually avoid natrol product because they seem to be the bottom of the barrel and you end up getting what you pay for.   I will be more careful in the future.</span></p>

<p>The fact that he often leaves out his own advice given to readers of his newsletter is proof of this.</p>
<p>The best example is the section regarding cholesterol reduction / cardiovascular health.</p>
<p>He offers limited information on natural alternatives to prescription cholesterol-lowering drugs.</p>
<p>He COMPLETELY left out perhaps the best natural alternative of all &#8211; Pantethine (a special form of vitamin B5 known as Pantothenic Acid).</p>
<p>A while back, he talked about Pantethine in his newsletter, and how great and safe it is for lowering cholesterol / triglycerides.</p>
<p>Yet in his book, this information is NOWHERE to be found!!</p>
<p>I also found much information about newer, scientifically-advanced supplements was completely missing as well.</p>
<p>As someone who has been involved in the nutritional supplement industry for 15 years, I am greatly disturbed by how incomplete this &#8220;up-to-date&#8221; book is.</p>
<p>There are books published 10 years ago that are better than this &#8220;latest&#8221; work by Dr. Balch.</p>
<p>Instead of wasting your $$$ on this book, I highly recommend &#8220;Dr. Atkins&#8217; Vita-Nutrient Solution&#8221; (Nature&#8217;s Answer to Drugs) by Dr. Robert C. Atkins (available here on Amazon, and in Barnes &amp; Noble stores)</span></p>

I was recently diagnosed with osteopenia after a hip fracture and have been researching all the osteoporosis meds available &#8230; and coming away horrified at their side effects.  I was just about to take my chances with a &#8220;do nothing&#8221; form of treatment when I found this book.  I am SO relieved and excited to find the really good information contained in this book on this particular subject and all the alternatives that are mentioned. I have two other books by James F. Balch and they are well worn from use.  This one is definitely joining the others as a must have in my home library.  After researching my own medical conditions, I looked up those of a few other family members &#8230; found just as much information available &#8230; and was able to share it with them.  Do not hesitate to purchase this book &#8230; it is a great tool &#8230; especially for those of us in the Second Act (50 years and older!) that are finding themselves being diagnosed with various medical conditions after living very healthy lives.  There are a lot of &#8220;age related&#8221; things that we are faced with every day and this book gives us a breath of fresh air from the usual prescription meds our MDs are so quick to put us all on!</span></p>

And I&#8217;m overwhelmed by the 50-foot aisle of supplements at my grocery store. I see 37 different kinds of calcium alone and honestly, I give up. What&#8217;s safe to take? Which manufacturers are trustworthy? Who knows?</p>
<p>Well, this book guides you through natural supplements that can improve or heal many conditions (big ones like high cholesterol, everyday ones like eczema or even anxiety). It discusses the studies &#8211; serious, peer-reviewed studies &#8211; proving the value of these supplements. It even tells you how your prescription medications may be working, and how supplements can assist or replace them. For some things, I&#8217;ve decided a supplement that can help me, and felt like I knew which bottle of pills was worth my money. For other things, I&#8217;ve come away understanding why my prescription drugs work. With the price of vitamins and supplements these days, avoiding just one wasted purchase would probably cover the cost of this book.</p>

<p>As  for  eating  other  types  of  fish,  Omega  3  contents  vary,  and  toxin  levels  vary  as  well.  Three  times  per  week  is  commended  to  be  the  most. These  are  galore  of  the  best  brands  out  there.  There  are  others  that  may  belong  in  this  list  as  well.  But,  these  manufacturers  all  have  very  good  product  and  are  amongst  the  largest,  most  affordable,  and  most  available  in  stores.</p>
<p>Storing  and  keeping.  Fish  oil  capsules  must  not  be  refrigerated  but  ought to  be  kept  away  from  direct  sunlight  and  not  placed  near  a  heat  source.  Always  refrigerate  liquid  fish  oil  after  opening.</p>
<p>Form.  Determining  if  your  Omega  3&#8242;s  are  in  triglyceride  or  ethyl  ester  form  shouldn&#8217;t  be  a  major  concern. I love the Complete Idiot&#8217;s Guide to 20-minute meals, so I thought this would be the best place to start.  The first part of the book has lots of helpful information, and each recipe shows all the nutritional content.  The downside is that a lot of the recipes include expensive ingredients or ingredients that I can&#8217;t find anywhere, such as Hi-Maize and Xylitol and Soy Flour.  My only resort would be ordering online.  With the 20 min meals book, I could almost always flip it open and find something to make with what I already had in the house.  <br />The fruit recipes are plentiful, but as someone who loves fruit, I can eat tons of it and don&#8217;t need the bother of cooking it.  But for those who find it hard to get in their daily servings, they would probably be great.  I also found that many of the recipes involve a lot of meat and though there is a small vegetarian section, those recipes don&#8217;t look stellar.  I would say, if you&#8217;re a vegetarian, a picky eater or on a budget, maybe just try looking up recipes online.</span></p>

My favorites so far are: Spaghetti Squash with Meat Sauce and to be entirely decadent &#8211; the Chocolate Ganache and the Flourless Chocolate Cake. My husband is gluten intolerant, so the flourless cake is a hit at our house. One of my daughters is a Type I diabetic and I bought this book for her and her husband. She loves it!<br />This cookbook is for everyone. I love the fresh ideas and easy recipes. The authors have included info with each recipe on calories, fiber, protein, carbs, and fat.<br />I have this cookbook out on the counter in my kitchen, and when I get stuck for an idea of what to cook for dinner, I ALWAYS find a recipe in this book. <p><strong>What  is  fat?</strong></p>
<p>Fat  is  one  of  the  three  macronutrients  required  to  be  eaten  in  comparatively  big  amounts  each  day  (the  other  two  are  carbohydrates  and  protein).</p>
<p>Fats  and  oils  are  officially  known  as  lipids  and  they  are  insoluble  in  water.  The  divergence  amidst  fats  and  oils  is:</p>

<li>Oils  are  liquid  at  room  temperature  </li>
</ul>
<p>Not  all  fats  are  bad.  Some  fats,  such  as  necessary  fatty  acids,  are  genuinely  very  good  for  preserving  proper  health  &#8211;  the  body  requires  a  sure  amount  of  fat  each  day  for  good  health.  <strong>Classification  of  fat</strong>  Fat  is  a  type  of  nutrient  likewise  known  as  lipids.  Lipids  include  the  following  types:
<ul>
<li><strong>triglycerides  (fats  and  oils)  </strong>-  these  come  in  respective  forms,  both  completely filled  (usually  found  in  animal  feed  sources)  and  unsaturated  (usually  found  in  plant  foods)  fats.  The  most  preferable  type  of  fat  to  consume  is  unsaturated,  but  little  amounts  of  completely filled  fat  may  be  endured  without  ill  effect,  as  long  as  it  is  share  of  a  healthy,  well-balanced  diet  full  of  whole  foods  (wholegrains  and  natural,  unprocessed  foods)  </li>
<li><strong>phospholipids</strong>  &#8211;  this  is  the  double  layer  of  fat  that  surrounds  all  cells  in  the  body  and  needs  to  be  maintained  to  keep  cells  healthy.  Phospholipids  are  likewise  found  in  respective  feed  sources,  but  the  most  plentiful  is  lecithin  (other  feed  roots  are  eggs,  liver,  peanuts,  soy  and  wheatgerm)  </li>
<li><strong>sterols</strong>  &#8211;  found  both  in  plants  (phytosterols)  and  in  animal  (cholesterol)  foods.  Sterols  are  necessary  for  formulating  some  hormones,  vitamin  D,  for  creating  bile  (which  helps  to  emulsify  and  aborb  fats  in  the  body)  and  for  making  cholesterol  (the  body  likewise  makes  it is  own  cholesterol  from  other  nutrients  in  the  liver)  </li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Essential  fatty  acids</strong></p>
<p>Essential  fatty  acids  are  those  fatty  acids  that  the  body  cannot  invent  on  it is  own,  so  are  required  to  be  consumed  on  a  each and everyday  basis  to  assure  good  health.  The  two  necessary  fatty  acids  (EFAs)  are:</p>
<p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Omega-3</strong>  &#8211;  is  derived  from  linolenic  acid.  Omega  3  fatty  acids  are  applied  to  make  cell  walls  supple  and  flexible  and  improve  circulation  by  ensuring  proper  red  blood  cell  flexibleness  and  function. Omega  6  fatty  acids  have  anti-inflammatory  properties  and  are  utile  for  bettering  skin  conditions  (eczema),  PMS,  rheumatoid  arthritis  and  diabetic  neuropathy.  Omega-6  deficiency  is  rare,  because  most  humans  in  the  West  get  more  than  sufficient  of  this  EFA  in  their  diet  </li>
</ul>
<p>One  main  function  of  EFA  are  to  fabricate  prostaglandins,  which  regulate  bodily  functions  such  as:
<ul>
<li>heart  rate  </li>
<li>blood  pressure  </li>
<li>blood  clotting  </li>
<li>fertility  and  conception  </li>
<li>regulate  inflammation  </li>
<li>encouraging  the  body  to  fight  infection  </li>
</ul>
<p>The  body  requires  these  two  necessary  fatty  acids  in  a  specific  proportionality  to  regulate  and  maintain  a lot of  functions  within  the  body.  The  proportionality  commended  is  4  (Omega  6)  :  1  (Omega  3),  but  in  the  West,  the  ratio  is  more  likely  to  be  anyplace  from  10:1  to  25:1,  which  current  exploration  shows  is  very  unhealthy.</p>

<p>At  approximately  the  age  of  35  the  body  starts  to  break  down  at  a  more  rapid  rate.  One  of  the  reasons  for  this  decline  in  health  is  the  reduction  in  the  release  of  adult  stem  cells  into  the  blood  stream,  a  supply  which  is  readily  available  in  your  very  own  bone  marrow.</p>
<p>Stem  cells  are  the  very  essence  of  life.  When  a  sperm  unites  with  the  egg,  the  very  initial  cell  formulated  is  a  stem  cell.  Also  known  as  &#8220;master  cells,&#8221;  a  stem  cell  has  the  capacity  to  discern  into  other  cell  tissue  types.  This  capacity  allows  the  stem  cell  to  become  a heap of  dissimilar  types  of  cells  as  necessitated  by  the  body  and,  therefore,  act  to  aid  optimal  organ  and  tissue  function. Quite  recently,  however,  it  has  been  ran into  that  adult  stem  cells  may  have  that  same  wide  reaching  potential.</p>
<p>TRACKING  AN  ADULT  STEM  CELL</p>
<p>It  was  the  invention  of  a  fluorescent  green  protein  found  in  a  jelly  fish  deep  in  the  ocean  that  firstborn  enabled  scientists  to  further  their  hypothesis  that  adult  stem  cells  may  have  the  same  pluripotent  capablenesses  as  embryonic  stem  cells.  By  isolating  the  DNA  of  the  fluorescent  protein  and  then  injecting  that  same  genetic  code  into  adult  stem  cells  in  a  laboratory  setting,  they  could  follow  their  trafficking  tendencies  by  seeing  which  elements  of  the  body  were  lit  up  with  fluorescent  coloring.</p>
<p>In  one  such  study,  highly  purified  bone  marrow  stem  cells  were  genetically  modified  to  construct  this  fluorescent  protein.  The  mice&#8217;s  stem  cells  were  then  killed  off  through  irradiation  and  genetically  modified  stem  cells  were  transplanted  into  their  bone  marrow,  leaving  only  the  fluorescent  bone  marrow  stem  cells  as  the  sole  source  of  available  stem  cells.  Cardiac  arrest  was  subsequently  triggered  in  the  mice  by  coronary  artery  occlusion.  In  less  than  two  weeks  time,  the  engrafted  fluorescent  stem  cells  had  travelled  through  the  bloodstream  to  the  heart  muscle  and  differentiated  into  cardiac  muscle  and  endothelial  cells  which  contributed  to  the  formation  of  functional  cardiac  tissue,  as  well  as  new  blood  vessels.</p>
<p>Further  studies  revealed  that  adult  stem  cells  could  cross  the  blood-brain  barrier  and  then  distinguish  into  brain  cells.  The  writers  of  the  study  wrote,  &#8220;Our  results  distinctly  show  that  adult  stem  cells  from  the  marrow  may  gain  access  to  the  adult  brain  and  assume  characteristics  of  central  nervous  scheme  neurons.&#8221;</p>
<p>Based  on  selective information  gathered  by  respective  scientific  teams,  Dr.  Gitte  Jensen  not so long ago  proposed  the  Stem  Cell  Theory  of  Healing,  Regeneration  and  Repair.  This  breakthrough  theory  proposes  that  bone  marrow  stem  cells  migrate  from  the  bone  marrow  and  travel  allround  the  body,  providing  for  healing  and  regeneration  of  damaged  organs  for the duration of  the  entire  lifetime  of  an  individual.</p>

Within  60  minutes  of  consumption,  a  25  to  30%  increase  in  adult  stem  cells  was  measured.  This  translates  to  approximately  3.5  million  further and added  circulating  stem  cells.  This  study  confirmed  that  StemEnhance  efficaciously  supported  the  release  of  stem  cells  from  the  bone  marrow. <p>Section Two goes into the endocrine system. Entire chapters are devoted to growth hormone, melatonin, oestrogen, testosterone and thyroid hormone. The authors give us the facts on how these hormones affect or are affected by the aging process. Supplementation is mentioned, but the authors made no attempt to &#8220;sell&#8221; anything.</p>
<p>Section Three deals with nutritional supplements. The list is quite exhaustive and make a very good reference for anyone considering supplementation. Here again, the reviews are quite balanced. No &#8220;miracle&#8221; nutrients and contraindications are mentioned as well.</p>
<p>Section Four deals with lifestyle factors in anti-aging. Topics include diet, detox, exercises, anti-stress tips, skin care and protection from pollutants. A lot of unsurprising, unsensational yet sound advice here.</p>
<p>Section Five gives us insight into what some health gurus do to stay fit and healthy. It won&#8217;t be easy for any of us holding a fulltime job in the city to follow. There is also mention of stem cell research and other cool stuff that will be coming our way soon.</p>
<p>Section Six provides a glossary and some references as well as a directory of anti-aging resources.</p>
<p>The greatest thing about this book, is that it is &#8220;scientifically&#8221; written by 2 doctors who live up to their professional training. Aimed only at informing and educating the reader, it provides nothing sensationally pro this or anti that. If you can only afford one book on this topic, buy this one.</span></p>
