Extraordinary, Compelling Piece of Outside-the-box Thinking and Analysis

Mister Morse has done an exemplary job here.

First, Juggernaut is a well thought out, level-headed, and refreshingly non-partisan look at the evolution of western political-economic thought from the 1500s and the discovery of the New World to the present. The author discusses Marxian critiques of capitalism, the School of Salamanca, robber-barrons and laissez-faire capitalism, the effects of the division of labor championed by Adam Smith, the interventionism of Keynes, the ascent of money as a preferred medium of exchange, the perils of interdependency created by a closed economic environment, and many more emotionally charged subjects with an admirably dispassionate tone. In each case equal time is given to the benefits and inherent problems of each of the ideas presented. This serves well to define the problems we face in the modern political and economic environment and to illustrate how the US and other developed nations got into their current messes and why there is such great difficulty in untangling them effectively.

Second, in light of this historical and theoretical backdrop, the book puts forth the thesis that the first requirement for a free society to develop and thrive is individual self-sufficiency, the idea that people can’t free themselves from a system if they depend on it for their basic survival needs. He asserts, quite convincingly in my opinion, that when an economy is open and people are free to reject or withdraw from participation in it, as happened with the discovery and colonization of the New World, it promotes freedom, ingenuity, innovation, and independence because the individual is not dependent on others for basic survival needs and has a wide array of alternative choices, the most important one being to choose none of the alternatives and to provide for himself. This, the author maintains, tends to result in mutually beneficial surge in individual productivity and a higher standard of living for all over time. When an economy closes, as with the closing of the American frontier, it causes a stifling interdependency that limits choices and forces people to choose one of the limited choices on offer, even if none of them are really in the individual’s best interests, and how many efforts to fix the problems caused by this forced interdependency have only made people more interdependent, making the problem worse. One may agree or disagree with some of his examples and conclusions, but it makes for very interesting and thought-provoking reading to the objective observer of today’s domestic and international economic and political circumstances.

Lastly, this book is not merely another tiresome list of complaints and grievances offering a lot of analysis and no real solutions. Having presented a thorough examination of what he sees as the problems, after looking thoroughly at all the ramifications of living in a closed economy, the last hundred or so pages of the book offer common sense, concrete steps people can take right now to learn how and begin to make themselves more self-sufficient and less dependent on “the system,” “the Juggernaut,” as Morse refers to it. Rather than try to create a single plan for everyone, this section gives readers many useful references and resources they can use as a starting point for their own research to create their own personal plan for freeing themselves from interdependency.

You should absolutely get this book if you want a truly fresh perspective on political economy and the current problems we face in these areas and want to do something to promote individual freedom for all by taking control of your own economic destiny back into your own hands.

Wow, wow, and wow.

Juggernaut is the most important book of its kind since Economics in One Lesson and even challenges that masterpiece as a grand survey of economic science and theory. In a sweeping survey of history and financial theory, Morse has produced a must-read that will change the political landscape if there is any justice.

First and foremost, “Juggernaut” presents a paradoxical theory of modern times: the system (money-based commerce, fiat government, specialization) is failing and in order to fix it, one must participate and fuel those same broken institutions. Morse’s original theory that the close of the frontier (and subsequently the closing of the economy) led to the zero-sum system we have and its inevitable problems. As Morse succinctly points out, if you want to participate in society (and you have no choice in the matter today because there is no free land to escape to as in the Age of Exploration), you have to pay your dues to the system, making it even more powerful and irresistible.

Second, the book is a compelling history of those institutions, from the School of Salamanca, which first formulated laissez-faire capitalism as a viable system, through the Industrial Revolution and the peak of unfettered corporations, to the Socialist revolution and the rise of the present-day welfare state. I have read no other book with such a comprehensive analysis on all of those important players in societal influence. It is a fair assessment of all sides of politics, from libertarianism to Marxism, which is absolutely unheard of in today’s strictly partisan political climate.

Third, “Juggernaut” is a fascinating sociological survey. Morse comes up with great concepts: In order to gain more leisure time, man made the world complex so as to require 10-15 years of schooling, and points out striking truths: government’s restrictions of tobacco while simultaneously subsidizing it is much like digging a whole and filling it back up.

In the end, this is a remarkable book. It is a must read that will benefit you every time you pick it up or discuss the important ideas within.

Compelling look at the modern political and economic system

Like many Americans, I was only relatively interested in economics and politics until 2008. In that tumultuous year, I lost about 60% of my wealth, lost my job, and lost my ability to buy a house. Suddenly, I had no choice but to be very interested in these subjects. To my great surprise, I had no idea how the system really worked, how my life was tangled in it, or what the implications were for my future. Like many Americans, I had to learn the hard way.

It seemed all I had was questions. Who were these powerful people in New york and Washington that had such control over my life? How did they get there? How did they foul things up so much? And why did it seem as though all their solutions only made matters worse?

In JUGGERNAUT, all of these questions are answered–and more. As the author claims, all of the problems we associate with the financial crisis of 2008 are linked to other cultural problems such as the culture divide and party politics, and all of our troubles stem from the structure of the system, itself. According to Morse, that structure is of a “closed system,” in which participants have become stuck without meaningful alternatives. Without alternatives, all that is left to do is compete for power and control others.

Morse does an amazing job of explaining this theory and covering all pertinent economic concepts in the process. This is the first book I have read in the field that is able to view our troubles objectively from both sides of the divide. The conclusion is that both sides have valid premises and that both only fail when they fail to see the valid premises of the other side.

This novel approach might leave JUGGERNAUT on the outside of the mainstream. But if it does, it only goes to prove the theory even more. If the events of the last decade or so are evidence of anything, it is that we are in need of new ideas outside of the mainstream to overcome the JUGGERNAUT.
