Much longer than it needed to be for the content

I learned some things from this book that were useful, specifically that all these different topicals which seem to have similar names have solid reasons for use and for layering. In this, I did find value and will recommit myself to my skin care program. You can really improve your skin using drug store formulations, according to this book.

Beside Reference Guide for Never Looking like an Old Lady

Years ago a young dermatologist told me that if I took care of my skin and took advantage of the developments in skin care preparations that I would never have to subject myself to the cold hard steel of surgery. This author takes you through the maze of information that exists. I especially appreciate his explanatioon of injectables that is a smart women’s way of being truly proactive. The author also has a line of skin care products at CVS. However, with the range of items from Oil of Olay and the discount structure of Amazon….my cost/benefit analysis continues. I think groups of friends would do well to get this book and then get together at least quarterly to discuss results. Putting your best face forward is a great economic tool as well as a very self affirming process. Great tool for organizing your mind to be on the alert for the aging process. I am a true Amazon warrior in fighting what some people consider the inevitable fate of being an old lady.

Acnefree and Clearzine combo for the win!

In the last few years I started suffering terrible skin breakouts like crazy all the time. My skin was going from clear to blotchy red almost overnight and it was soo greasy too. The skin doctor I went to swore up and down that it all I was suffering from was just a hormonal imbalance and it would eventually pass but after taking prescriptions for it for three months, I saw absolutely no difference in my appearance. I began to stay inside all the time and also became very moody as well. I was so desperate that I probably spent a small fortune trying pretty much every kind of acne “cure” I came across in the stores. Then the doctor decided to give me another prescription but this time the stuff ended up doing nothing but making made my face even redder. I started using Acnefree and had fairly good results. A friend of mine had been taking a herbal acne supplement called Clearzine and suggested I try it too. I was going to wait until I was finished with the Acnefree program but thought maybe combining both would provide better results. Well after a week of using both my acne was completely gone and after 3 weeks all the blemishes and red spots were gone! If you are thinking of trying Acnefree, pick up a bottle of Clearzine too and try them together. These weren’t overnight cures, so don’t think it’s gonna solve your problems in a few days. But I really think this combo is worth a shot, I am very impressed with how well it worked for me. It also got rid of the greasy, oily feeling on my face as well. I’m pretty convinced now that there are no miracle overnight acne cures but this product really seemed to work for me, I really liked how easy it was to use too. I’ve tried proactive before, it’s similar but more expensive and did not work as well (for me personally at least). Anyway, like I said, I’m really impressed.

I honestly didn’t think it would work.

I have had pretty bad acne since I was 14 (Im now 20). I never thought I would even make it just a little better. I tried this stuff and after 2 or 3 weeks I noticed a huge difference. I have acne, acne scars and huge pores that are really visible. This stuff made all 3 of those things go away. My skin is starting to look smooth instead of like it has holes.

A bit of advice for people who have just started using it:

*At first this stuff dried out my lips and made them chap, that went away after a few days.

*I noticed that the next morning after using the 3-step stuff, I would get the white-head pimples, then by the end of the day they would go away. So if you get white heads after using this, don’t think it is making it worse, the pimple is probably trying to fight the product.

Freedom in 30 days!

I am writing to thank everyone who posted their experiences here. As an adult acne sufferer it is easy to become hopeless- even when you’re starting to see changes but they aren’t coming fast enough. In this case, I needed encouragement to be patient and wait for the changes that were in store. I’ve been using Acnefree every day for the last month. I first came across a bottle left over in the shower at my gym. I used it because it listed benzoyl peroxide which is the only acne med that works (trust me, I’ve used them ALL) and tea tree oil in the ingredients. I had recently started applying pure tea tree oil to my face and felt the combination would be ideal. I can’t tell you how surprised I was to come across the formulation so randomly. My was much less greasy after using the product so I bought the 3-step kit.

It did not work in three days to eliminate my acne but I could immediately appreciate an improvement in the feel of my skin. It felt cleaner and wasn’t greasy. That in itself was a miracle since in addition to spending hundreds of dollars on acne meds, I’ve probably laid out the same amount on blot sheets, mattifying lotions, etc. I did break out more in the first couple of weeks but, thanks to the words I read on this and other websites, I didn’t give up on the system. Apparently, this product sucks the bacteria from deep in your skin to the surface so it can be removed. I have some photos of my cheeks in the past two weeks looking worse than they have in a long time so I believe this is true.

Now, however, I can truly say that I’ve turned the corner. My face is smooth. The hard, painful bumps that emerged in the past two weeks are totally gone. Even though I am just using this kit and not the fade cream, the marks on my face are visibly lighter. I have not had a new whitehead in few days. The driness (which wasn’t excessive) over the past month has been totally worth it because it has revealed beautiful new skin. I am so grateful to have found this product after a decade of daily self-consciousness about my skin, wondering if a new whitehead had emerged since I last checked, wiping oil from my forehead several times a day, desperately researching cures that all failed, and worrying every time I met a guy what he’d think when my foundation was off- finally, I’m free.

I have a few notes about application. I also bought the Terminator to deal with the new bumps that came up. It didn’t offer an instant fix but it probably helped and was cheap enough at Target that it wasn’t a burden to add to the regimen. I tried putting on tons of the product, as suggested on acne.org. That did not seem to make an appreciable difference. Acnefree works in its time, and I couldn’t accelerate it, but it did work. Also, I’ve seen people post here that they do not use a cotton swab to apply the repairing lotion. I switched to using one because it helps exfoliate the skin. You can actually see dead skin cells coming off as the lotion is going on and I found when I didn’t do this, my cheeks felt rough and looked darker. Lastly, I truly believe this product works all day as advertised. With other acne meds, I would put them on under my makeup and find that I usually had a whitehead by the end of the day. This product keeps my skin feeling extremely fresh all day long and seems to be having an antibacterial effect that prevents new breakouts during the day. My makeup also looks great when my skin is so clear and non-greasy.

I’m writing this out of a true sense of compassion for everyone who suffers with acne. Try this product. Stick with it because it will work eventually. And, as someone who has finally woken up with beautiful skin after trying desperately to achieve this for ten years, I can tell you it feels great.

Clarisonic Pro Facial Brush

This product is one of the best things I’ve ever bought for myself… It does exactly what it says: cleans your skin better than you ever thought you could, mildly exfoliates, and just makes your skin look fabulous. I can also tell it is softening my fine lines on my forehead (which are just starting). Once you use a clarisonic, you’ll never go back to washing your face the regular way. I really like the Pro better than the one my friend bought awhile ago, b/c I changed it to a two minute timer b/c I have very oily skin, and I also like to be able to customize the speed (high after the gym, normal on a regular day). A FANTASTIC buy… a must for anyone who is looking for a boost to their facial skin. Plus, if you buy the spot attachment, you can use it on rough places like your upper chest, elbows, and knees (it has a special speed built in for body areas).

INVESTMENT

Think of how much $ you’ve spent over the years on cleansers, scrubbers, etc…think about it, seriously think about it..b/c after using this product, it made me think of how much I’ve wasted and should have spent it on this product. WHY you ask…No matter how expensive/cheap/raved about cleanser I’ve used, nothing really cleaned my face. It would either dry it up, leave some type of a residue, or just irritated my skin. After years of trial and error, I gave up, and stuck to good ol fashion water and oil of olay. I’m blessed with good skin, but I still have my problem areas. I got this as a gift. VERY GLAD I did.

I was skeptical. I was hesitant and kinda scoffed at the idea that a rotating brush could do much for me. I felt my skin before I used the product, pretty darn smooth. I tested it after I used the product – wow, it made my before skin feel like sand paper. I just knew that it cleaned out buildup of product (makeup, cleanser, lotion, whatever) because my skin actually GLOWED. I used the standard 2 minutes function on my t-zone. It really buffed away some spots that had raised bumps before. Pretty insane b/c I really didn’t think I need this product. I could only imagine what it could do for people who have problematic skin.

So all the products i’ve bought/used before couldn’t even come close…made me feel like I did waste a lot of money.

What else do iI like about the Pro vs. the Mia – the 4 speed rules – only because I want it. I end up using the standard speed a lot for me face. It also seems like the handle is a little bit bigger than the regular model. I don’t think the Clarisonic cleaners that it comes with are all that fabulous. My skin feels a little bit drier than when I use some other stuff – I recommend you use your own cleansers (as long as it doesn’t have exfoliants in it. If it does, then take the brush off the machine after each use to clean it out – or it will cause build up. I like that there are grooves under the brushes so water can flow out and not stay stagnant in the machine. The design of the handle is ergonomic and comfortable to use. I would suggest making it lighter – when you’re using the body brush, it gets to be a little heavy after a few runs.

I like the brush head that it comes with. Great for sensitive skin, great at all modes of the machine (I use the Pro mode for m t-zone and chin – my problem areas) – about once a week. I use it every other day on the normal speed. And alternate with the body brush.

What I find most valuable – BODY BRUSH! This is what really hit me. I’ve tried different types of brushes and exfoliants, but my skin just wasn’t baby soft. I’ve spent $ at spas doing a full body scrub. Yeh, my skin is silky smooth awesome, but it only lasts for a few days, then I feel a few dry spots here and there. Not anymore!!! Dry spots GONE. Skin Smooth. It’s amazing. What I spent for 2 body scrubs = this machine. It makes me happy. PLUS this has cleared up dry spots that body scrubs have missed – the back of my thighs and upper arms. My skin is like butter now.

BRUSHES – find some online -there are deals out there.

good product

The benefits of this product can be seen immediately. You will experience softer, smoother skin after the first use and your face will really look and feel squeaky clean. My pimples don’t last as long (sometimes disappear in less than 24 hours which never happened before), and my expensive skin care products are more effective. The real reason for the purchase was a bunch of blackheads on my chin and they are diminishing in quantity. Also they are more brown now than black which I could see after using a Biore strip. Hopefully they will eventually disappear. I recommend this product.

AWESOME

I have a hormonal disorder and one of the external manifestations is terrible, terrible acne. I went from having clear, perfect, glowing skin, to dry, pimply skin, with lots of black marks in a short period of time. Within two weeks of using Dudu-Osun, my skin looked better than it has in the past year. It’s been about a month and it has significantly controlled my breakouts, giving my skin a chance to heal and black marks to fade. I HIGHLY recommend this product for acne sufferers. It took my skin about 3 days to get used to it and sometimes it seems harsh, but it has worked better than ANYTHING I’ve tried in the past year–and that includes expensive chemical peels, microderm abrasions, proactiv, clinique, etc.

I have been using this soap for about 4 years now. The very first time anyone tries it, there will always be a burning sensation. Your skin has to get used to it for a couple of days. But the major problem is the fact that many people are using a cloth towel/ shower puff to apply the product. Never do that. I also made that mistake during the first couple of months of my use. I gave up on it because it seemed to make my acne worse. However after watching a youtube video about this soap, I learned that not using a cloth to apply the soap on you skin is key for the soap to work. Try using your hands instead (like I do). It really makes such a difference!

I’m hooked on anything that can vanish 20 year old stretch marks!

This soap is divine. The black soap is drying so I use the coconut papaya one from Nubian Heritage after I rince off the black soap because it seems to conditions the skin and my skin is less dry. Using the two together has been wonderful. I have 20 year old stretch marks from childbirth that are fading! Anything that can do that is a winner in my book. I thought I would be stuck with those for life and never really tried to do away with them since I thought it was a lost cause. Then I started using these products and I swear in two weeks I started to notice that those stretch marks were fading and some disappeared all together. I told my boyfriend and he said it was placebo effect but then he started to really notice dark spots fading and completely disappearing as well and now he is using the soap too which means now I have to buy more since it is going quite fast. Also got my teen and 22 year old to start using it. Now my bathroom smells like a tropical paradise every time I bathe and now showering is no longer a chore but I actually look forward to the process. And my skin is smooth like a baby.

Since the black soap can be drying, I follow up with the coconut papaya soap since it seems to condition the skin. Plus the smell is quite yummy. Sometimes I use Carol’s Daughter “Bring back the moisture” liquid soap which is also great and works well with the black soap. Then I rince. I follow-up with organic rose water as a toner, placed on cotton ball then dab over my face and neck. Rose water soothes the skin. I moisture with organic coconut oil. I guess you can use shea butter moisturizer but I like coconut oil. For the body I either use coconut oil or the Coconut Papaya body lotion with vanilla bean extract when I have it. It smells so yummy and is excellent for the skin.

I’ve been using these products for almost a month and have had excellent results. Dark spots on my face have disappeared from teen acne years, the occassional pimple I used to get is no more and stretch marks on my breasts are gone, the ones on my thighs have faded, not completely gone yet but I took a pic when I noticed they were fading so that I can compare in a month but I can already see they are fading by the naked eye.

For the person who said that if you are light skinned African American not to use this soap because it makes you lighter. I am light skinned AA and the soap didn’t turn me into Michael Jackson ghost white or anything. On the other hand, I have noticed that my complexion has evened out since the dark patches and spots are gone. I use the same color foundation that I used before…now just less of it since I don’t have to try to cover dark spots since they are gone. Works for people who are not of color aka caucasian as well. My boyfriend is Scandinavian and it works for his skin as well and you don’t get whiter skin than that. The soap doesn’t know skin color. Also, I don’t rub the soap directly on my face since it has stuff in it, I guess for exfoliation and I have sensitive skin so I rub the soap in my hands and get a really good lather then wash my face with my hands that way I’m not rubbing my skin with the bar and causing unnecessary irritation. I think maybe that’s why some reviewers are complaining about irritation. Don’t put the bar directly on your face and scrub. I never put any bar directly on my face anyway. I do put the bar directly on my body and wash away since my body is less sensitive and can take the scrubbing but if I have just shaved my legs then I lather the soap in a wash cloth and then use the wash cloth to clean so that I won’t cause irritation to my freshly shaven legs. I also noticed that the hair on my legs seems to be growing back slower since I’ve been using this soap. I don’t know if the enzymes in the soap is stimulating the hair follicles less or what but I have noticed slower hair regrowth. I don’t know if it’s a result of the soap or something else but I’m not complaining. The soap is also great for the eh em private parts…especially the coconut papaya…you’ll be yummy smelling and delectable all over…don’t ask me how I know, just trust me…enough said about that one.

The soap is supposed to be great for tightening the skin and preventing wrinkles. I don’t know if this is true since I’m 41 with no wrinkles so far, so I say, cool, don’t have none, won’t be none especially if I use these products. Win Win!

This soap is a little more expensive than your average chemical filled soap but it’s worth it. I was using Dove which I would pay $7 for 8 bars. Now, I pay $10 for 4 with one bar lasting about 3 weeks since now my boyfriend decided to use the soap too and I’m spending a lot more time in the shower with it but it is so much better for my skin so I don’t sweat the price. And for those who complain that it discolors white wash clothes..fooey, don’t use white wash clothes then! I use dark colored ones and don’t have a problem with discoloration. Wash clothes are cheap…you can always replace them and buy more…you only get one skin.

I’ve been using the soap for a few months now and I did a test, I had a pimple and silly me, I kept picking at and it resulted in a very dark spot on my face once it was gone. Decided this was the perfect time to really see if this removes spots since I had a fresh one. So I continued using the black soap/coconut papaya soap, rosewater as toner, and coconut oil as moisturizer combination and that dark spot is completely gone. It did take 4 weeks but it was very dark. So, these products do remove dark spots.

Prevented a haircut!

I have long, fine hair that tends to get dry. Only recently have I been really committed to keeping my hair healthy; I want to try growing my hair out really long! I use frequent deep conditioners, leave-in treatments and try to use heat-stylers as infrequently as possible. Not gonna lie, this product got my attention because of Evangeline Lily (I’m a big Lostie!) I thought I’d give the shampoo and conditioner a try, and they were ok, but not the best. THIS, however! If you are trying to give your hair a big boost of moisture and health, do yourself a favor and give the overnight treatment a try. Here were the best things I noticed about it:
1. My ends felt so soft and healthy after one night that I changed my mind about needing to go for a haircut. If you’re trying to grow out your hair, you want to get as few cuts as possible, right? Here you go- add a few months of growing between cuts.
2. My hair actually felt heavier, even after washing and drying the next day. I could literally tell the difference in moisture absorbed by weight! It meant a noticeable difference in flyaways, and my fine hair still felt styled hours after I was done drying it.
3. I was very skeptical about how a product this intense wouldn’t feel oily, but it really doesn’t. I put the product in my hair a few hours before bed, but it was totally absorbed in minutes- a little bit of a “gunked up” feeling while the product was actually on, but not oily. I just put my hair in a braid to keep it out of the way, and to not feel ‘unbathed.’

I will say that you’ll probably need more than the recommended 1-2 pumps. My hair is long enough that I can tuck it under my arms, and I use between 6-8 pumps. Otherwise, nothing but good to say about this awesome product! Enjoy your new hair!

Fantastic Product

I purchased and started using this approximately 3 weeks ago. I apply it every night before going to bed. The results have been spectacular. I had a bad hair dye incident a few months ago which resulted in lots of split ends and breakage. After using this product I find that I have less split ends and my hair is a lot smoother. Also, a lot less breakage. Although this is somewhat pricey for its size, I will definitely purchase this again.

Difficult to work through hair, but results shine!

I have long, fine hair that was once very thick. Due to improper hair care, and bad hair habits I tend to “shed” a lot. I purchased this product hoping it would help with the split ends I have because of over use with heated styling tools. Although it has not helped my split ends, it has made my hair look very shiny and munch more manageable in the mornings. Additionally my hair is shedding less.

I have a VERY difficult time working this through my hair to get an even application on split ends and damaged hair. The product tends to glob and concentrate in certain sections, which does not allow for easy or even treatment of the effected areas.

The reason that this reader was dissatisfied with the book was not because it was a bad book, but because he picked up the wrong book for what he was interested in, namely cellular/molecular neuroscience, which this book is clearly not about. I regard this book more of a systems-based approach to neuroscience – the book attempts to give you a “gestalt” view of how the different functional subsystems work. For a more basic text, I’d advise you to read Bear’s Neuroscience. For a more reductionist text, maybe you could read something like “From the Neuron to the Brain”

Oh, and I forgot to add, this is an excellent book for the purpose for which it was written.

An excellent neuroscience text

While taking neurobiology as a graduate student I used this text to supplement Principles of Neural Science. While I read Principles and enjoyed it, I used Neuroscience to study for course exams and my departmental preliminary examination. The writing is clear, concise, and very to the point. Unlike Principles, experimental studies underlying the facts are not described in as much detail in Neuroscience (this presentation of information is better when you want to get to the core of what you need to know). While many new texts like to go into heavy detail about new drug and genetic manipulations for neurological and psychological disorders, speculations in Neuroscience about such “up to the minute” information is kept to a minimum. The messages of the wonderful color illustrations accompanying the text are easy to grasp (they serve their purpose very well). An excellent upper level undergraduate or graduate level neuroscience text. Very good for a concise review of the information.

As an undergraduate Psychobiology student, this text served me well in my Neuroscience course. In all honesty I never went. I just read this book. I got excellent marks in the class. As a serious slacker and bibliophile, I recommend this textbook for any like-minded student.
