price and reviews can’t be beat

Had never heard of SquareTrade before I came here researching TVs. Got my Samsung 42″ plasma at Sears but came to SquareTrade for a 3 year extended warranty. $47 vrs $200 at Sears, it was a no-brainer. Reviews I read online for SquareTrade were all positive, BBB rates them highly.

I dont normally get additional warranty contracts but I did this time. My TV went out on me after the initial warranty ran out. I was able to replace the TV with a new one. I would recommend getting an additional warranty for any TV purchase.

Read the details before you buy a Squaretrade warranty

I have several Squaretrade warranties I purchased 1-2 years ago. They do what they say they will do, but the devil’s in the details with Squaretrade warranties. The way they sell these for a lot lower cost is because they limit their exposure, and recoup costs on the back end. They limit their exposure by only providing total coverage up to the purchase price of your item. That no lemon policy they have is a joke, because you will likely hit your coverage limit far before the 3 repair limit. For example, if you pay $1500 for a plasma tv, and the repair the first time was $500, you only have $1000 in remaining coverage for the life of the warranty. NOW comes the part where they really screw you. The warranty repair estimate comes from them. Let’s go back to my example of having a repair for $500 done, leaving you with remaining coverage of $1000 on the tv. Now, your 2nd repair estimate comes in over $1000. What do they do? They don’t repair it. They TAKE your item, and cut you a check for $1000. What does this leave you? With 2/3 of the cost of a new tv and no remaining warranty, and you are still out the cost of the warranty. They take your tv, repair it for much less than the estimate (using an internal repair dept), and SELL it, keeping the money. This may or may not be acceptable to you. I bought them, because the warranties were dirt cheap, and I wanted SOME coverage. I would not buy this warranty in many cases.

Beware – bait and switch tactics

I had to cancel a TV purchase because of delivery problems, then reorder it. So I also had to cancel my first Squaretrade warranty. Then I got an email from squaretrade soliciting my business for the replacement TV with an offer of a 10% discount. Seems nice, right? But Squaretrade instead jacked up the price on the warranty for the replacement TV (same brand/model) – jumping from $139 to $275, even though the price for the reordered TV was $200 LESS! I called them and their fast-talking rep gave me lots of nonsensical excuses, but not a single solid reason. I don’t know if this is their new way of doing business, since they have mostly great reviews, but I certainly feel cheated. Be very careful when dealing with them, and get everything in writing before you pay – their phone reps WILL NOT give you a straight answer. I’ve written to them about this, and will update this review if I get a substantive response.

I returned the TV this warranty was for and SquareTrade gave me no hassle also returning the warranty. I did this within 30 days of purchasing it. A refund was credited to me in a timely enough manner.

I hope I never use it !

My son recommended getting this plan so I did. I hope I never have to use it ( which would mean the TV would never have any problems ) ! However I did receive the contract as noted, and when I called to ask questions about registering the TV to the contract, the people were very nice, not rushed, and willing to answer all questions. They even encouraged me to call back if I had any more questions.

With a start like this, I expect any needed use of this contract will probably be handled just as well.

But then, I hope the TV never fails and I never have to use the service plan ….
